In this article, I’m going to offer up my own personal thoughts on how to select the best Jillian Michaels workout DVDs for your needs. Each program has its own benefits (and price range), so it’s important to weigh the pros and cons for each before deciding to invest in one. Although I have used many of these products before, I have also included other Jillian Michaels DVD reviews to make this article as comprehensive as possible.

Ripped in 30 Review

ripped in 30Ripped in 30 is a popular choice for people looking to lose a bit of weight over the course of one month. It is designed to accelerate your results over a 30 day period through a comprehensive diet guide and targeted workouts. Basically, the fitness component includes four different 24 minute workout routines that change every week.

One of the key things I liked about this program is that Jillian keeps the workouts interested throughout the 30 days. Every week you do an entirely different set of workouts, which helps you avoid boredom. Also, within each workout, the routine is broken down into three interval – one strength, one cardio, and one abs. You cycle through the three intervals throughout the whole workout, thus tackling every aspect of a well-rounded fitness routine. You get to lose fat, develop your abs, and tone your muscles.

The workouts are intense and get progressively harder with each week. By the time week 4 rolls around, you will be truly doing some advanced moves (but don’t worry, Jillian is an excellent teacher who shows you how to modify if necessary).

Pros:

  • These short, intense workouts are ideally suited for busy people with a lot on the go
  • includes diet and nutrition pointers
  • Jillian makes each workout routine fun and interesting

Cons:

  • 30 days is not really enough time to see huge results in weight loss
  • workouts become less intense towards the end of the 24 minutes (rather than harder)

Conclusion: 

Ripped in 30 is ideally suited for beginners who don’t have a ton of time to devote to long fitness routines. Its progressive difficulty allow you to eventually reach the point where you can tackle more intense workouts. Expect to see good results from this program, but be realistic about what can be accomplished in only 30 days.

30 Day Shred Review

30 day shredThis is one of Jillian’s oldest workout DVDs – but despite its age it is still enormously effective as a fat shredding program. And one of the great things about it, is that it is geared towards both beginners and advanced fitness people due to the variety of moves involved.

This DVD set comes with three progressively difficult workout routines. Each workout routine is super intense and provides virtually no break. Instead, you simply transition to a different aspect of your fitness (e.g. strength vs. cardio). This allows you to avoid getting overworked will still ensuring a super effective workout. Each workout is only 20 minutes long, but gosh, they each pack a serious punch!

Pros:

  • Short 20 minute workouts are ideally suited for busy people
  • Each workout is devised to maximize calories burned (due to no breaks)
  • Jillian makes each routine interesting and fun

Cons:

  • Lacks a strong nutrition/diet component
  • Since each phase only has one DVD, you can get bored while waiting to progress to the next level.

Conclusion: 

Although 30 Day Shred is considered one of Jillian Michaels’ best workout DVDs, I find it lacking in a couple of areas. For one, there is no solid diet or nutrition component, which is often one of the biggest keys to success in weight loss. In addition, it doesn’t really offer up enough variety over the course of 30 days. It’s a good program if you’re looking to pick up something for cheap, but if you really want a comprehensive weight loss program, you may want to look elsewhere.

Jillian Michaels Body Revolution (My Personal Choice)

jillian michaels body revolution boxIf you’re looking for a completely comprehensive fitness program (one that incorporates both nutrition and workouts) then Jillian Michaels Body Revolution is my personal recommendation.

While “Ripped in 30″ and “30 Day Shred” are good on an introductory level, they aren’t great if you’re really looking to shed lots of weight and look your very best. That’s because they aren’t long enough and they don’t offer very much guidance on nutrition. I mainly use these programs to supplement my workouts – not as a MAIN feature.

If you’re serious about weight loss than you really have no choice but to commit yourself to a comprehensive weight loss program for at least two or three months. You have to be willing to alter your diet and engage in intense physical activity at least five days a week. Body Revolution is the one program that actually allows you to do that.

Body Revolution is broken down into three 30 day phases that get progressively harder every month. In one week, you do 5 workouts, each targeting different aspects of your fitness (e.g. front of body, back of body, and overall cardio). I dedicated myself to this program for 90 days and achieved truly awesome results because I stuck with the workouts and followed the diet guide. Pros:

  • Completely comprehensive fitness routines and diet guide
  • Graduates of the program commonly lose between 20-30 pounds with this program
  • Geared towards losing weight quickly
  • Workouts are interesting, fun, and change regularly you don’t get bored

Cons:

  • Most expensive Jillian Michaels Workout DVD set

Conclusion:

It’s basically like having your own personal trainer to show you every move you need to do and your own nutritionist to help you eat properly to achieve the best results possible in 90 days. If you’re serious about weight loss then this is the one to get!
